Maren markmaren
A slow morning at the Maren coffee bar — steam rising from a brew.

Est. 2022 · Tynemouth

Slow coffee, from the coast.

Small lots, named farms, careful roasting. Brewed by the harbour, sent anywhere in the UK.

Our intent

We started Maren with a single drum roaster and a stubborn belief that coffee tastes better when no one is in a hurry.

The ritual

Three slow moves, every time.

Step 01

Grind

Medium-fine for filter, fine for espresso. The grind is the lever you change before anything else.

Step 02

Bloom

Twice the weight of water as coffee. Forty-five seconds. Let the gas escape before you pour properly.

Step 03

Pour

Slow concentric circles. Keep the bed level. Stop when the scale tells you to, not before.

Come and sit

A small bar by the harbour.

Twelve seats. A roaster in the corner. We open Tuesday to Sunday — the cafe is built around regulars and the weather.

The Maren cafe interior — raw timber, warm overhead light.

Easily the best coffee on the coast. The Kayon Mountain has been my Saturday ritual for a year.
