The cafe in winter
What a coastal cafe is for, on the days when nobody comes in dressed for the weather.
Iona Hardy
There is a Tuesday in January where it is so cold that the door fogs every time someone opens it. The regulars come in dressed for it. Everyone else apologises for the weather as if they had ordered it themselves.
Winter is when the cafe earns its keep, quietly. We make slower drinks. We talk more. We change the music. The Harbour Blend, which behaves like an espresso for the rest of the year, becomes a long flat white people hold with both hands.
If you find yourself walking past on one of those days, come in. We will probably have just made a fresh pot of filter and be looking for a reason to pour it.
